Hey all, I finally got the balls to go after the tribal skull from WSNH #1. Teeth are a lil jacked up color wise, the left eye came out killer and a lot of other good things, still though ... a lot to work on. FIRE AWAY!!!!:2guns:

bob it looks great man, i really like the the way the skull looks separated form the back ground dude and like you said there's a lot of good stuff in it, after chatting with you on the phone i think your next task needs to be figuring out your materials, how they work and how you can make them work for you, instead of you becoming a slave to them, just try a bunch of different mixtures and pressures and try and find some that that work for you, same with every one else i think there's a lot of people hung up on mixtures and such. you all read stuff like a 50/50 mix or a 1:1 and for some reason think that's cast in stone, its not! some colors and mixtures can go as high as 1:3 (one part paint to three parts reducer) and still be usable some like most blacks you only are around 1:.5 (one part paint to 1/2 part reducer). you see the reducer is only there to help you get the paint to the surface in a smooth and even manner, it doesn't have a specific purpose to the chemical make up of the paint its self ( I should interject something here, there is systems that require a reactive reducer in that case then you do need to fallow the mix ratios a bit closer as the base's wont chemically link to each other, these include but are not limited to DuPont and Sherwin Williams) You all need to learn what works best for you and the exact circumstances that your working on, what works this time my be completely off the next time but if you know how to recognize the how the paint is acting you will then know how to adjust the mixture to fit what your doing. this is where asking questions comes in, ask away! :biggthump

looks great bob!!!

Thank you. But now come the scary part. I don't have a cutter to make the positive mask to cover him up, and when I tried it on the spade all my paint lifted. Any suggestions? Thanx again.

Great job Bob!
I'm really impressed with the work on the face. The eyes are nicely done, killer color and sparkle.

Shane is so right about reduction. 1 to 1 is only a good starting point and you fine tune it from there. Even the temperature can make you change your reduction on the same color. What works for one person might not work for another. So don't be affraid to play with reduction and pressure.

How did you prep your panel before painting?
You could test a small area before masking over the skull.

Annie :)

2k primer ( nason ) wet sand,kc20 wash, Sem black, kc20 wash again, mask and go to work. I might have scuffed the black, I think I did before cleaning it. Oh yeah, on the spade it was the candy washes that lifted.

What grit did you sand with?
Did it lift all the way down to the primer or down to the black base?

I think it was all the way to the primer. I peeled this one off the skull a few minutes ago and it came off fine, I used low tack frisk. Now my issue is with my final purple wash lifting when I try to get the remaining tribal's off so I can clear. WTF!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! oh yeah, I don't remember the grit, 400 I think.

Well here we go again. Alot of really good shit here but a few obvious flaws. I had to use frisk for my positive mask and after the marbleizing and the final wash I pulled it(came off clean) but it did a few weird things. Then I had to cut each tribal out cause the final candy wash wanted to lift. So here it is with no clear. I'll be back in a lil while to let you know the results of the clear finish. Wish me luck!!!:45:

Awesome Bob!
Great job.
Maybe your problem with the candy was that it did not dry long enough. If you used 400 grit on primer, it's totally fine.

You will be ok with clear I'm sure.

I think you did a very good job....You clearly managed your mask just fine and the color scheme rocks. Maybe one of the color specialist can advise you of a transparent color that will work over the color on the teeth so that you can pull out a darker tobacco stained color. I only say that only because you were concerned with the color....Again i am chasing you...i have had that stencil for over a year and have yet to tackle it...

Take your time, It's not a race brother.I'm still a bit ticked at the few flaws in this piece. It's like I can't get over that one piece were there just HAS to be at least one f &$# k up. ya know they say practice makes perfect, but if no one's perfect....WHY PRACTICE!!!!:devil2:
