Here is a shot of an experimental laminent technique that Mike is prototyping. We call this "The Matrix".

HOTDOG!!!
Wow this is really cool. I can't even begin to guess how this was done.
Thanks for sharing this new finish with us! I'm sure it's gonna be very popular.

Pretty cool looking....i wouldnt call it prototype though.....its origins are from a movie.....proto is latin for the word original. Not to much these days is really original....just spin offs of other ideas.

I believe it's a prototype for the fact that this type of L A M I N A T E has never been done before....not because of the design.

HOPEFULLY A HOW TO WILL BE IN THE FUTURE, SUPER COOL

Yes... the PROCESS is a prototype.
Several other people had tried to accomplish an acceptable laminent, with less than acceptable results. Mike was asked to try and this is the result.
This is for a large guitar manufacturer.

it looks like it has a Holographic relection to it. or is that just the picture. it looks really cool. are you going to work anything on top of it or just the prototye for now

It is holographic. Pretty cool actually. I must admit, I doubted that it was going to work...... but it really does look cool.

Man that does look cool, and one of my favorite movies too. Thanks for posting. I'd like a how to too please.

Yes it does look cool I can just imagine what it looks like in person. Is the lamainte like what is used for pick guards, cuz if it is I want one? LOL Thanks

It is a paper backed holographic film. Promotional Matrix stuff. I know that I didn't create the Matrix. HAHAHA. But did work out the combination of materials that worked together with out causing delamination. We need to do more R&D before I let everyone in on a cool easy technique. I will deal with my own failures first.

I saw this during the pinstriping class. It looks much better in person.

You have permission to pop over and try it out on the hood of my wagon Mike ;)

man i love expermentin stuff, looks kinda like a water slide to me, but i could be way off, or possibly a thermal a heat transfer using polycarbonate, or maybe even laser drilled holes in multi layered polyimide? man now i want to go play! :p

Nice work Mike , i tried something simlar awhile backa go, didnt look that cool though , that looks awsome !!
I know that I didn't create the Matrix.
Ahhh... but did the Matrix create you? And if so, are you the 'prototype Mike' or 'Version 4.20'? Version 665.9? Okay, stopping now...
Very cool - and congratulations on being picked to give this sort of application a shot/your expertise! You get the honors, and we get to reap some of the benefits... Even if only through inspiration; everybody here wins. Thanks for sharing!

Mike that is way coool......ive been working on pickguard plastic lately..........using the mother of pearl layer as my bottom coat with a thin layer of plexi on top for the top coat..graphic inlays ion between..not using it on guitars though.......just wall panels.
you get that to work on guitars..........very nice.

That looks awesome. If it all works out, I'm sure design possibilities would be endless.

Wait, SHIT.....but I wanted to start painting my new goalie mask this week.
DAMN IT!!! Every time I want to start something, I see something like this on there that freakin' rocks and makes me want to wait!!!! Oh, well, its only paint!
If all else fails, sand, paint, laminate (or whatever else) and clear!!!

It really is nothing more than an experiment of materials. It was done with a foil base laminated poster. In other words, there was a semi trans layer applied to the foil holographic background. The holographic paper was tiled in approx 1.5 in squared tiles. The tricky part is getting the clear to bind to the surface and yet, not disturb the inks. I used the Simtec Poly. I had a delamination early in the process and then used and intercoat clear with a lot of reducer it it sprayed lightly over it. Then I applied the first round of simtec clear.
I then sanded with 320 and now that the edge of the pattern material was buried, I went around it with black and faded it into the background color. Then it was recleared then buffed. The urethane clear takes longer to build up that kind of millage to bury some of these high quality prints.
The paper foil was adhered to the surface with a photographic spray adhesive. Sprayed on both the front side of guitar and back side of Holographic image. Kind of like decoupage. But with out saturation of the image with the adhering material.

hey mike have you ever thought about waterslide useing lightfast inks to mass produce some of your artwork onto guitars and stuff ,there are some nice waterslide papers that dont need pre clearing ,you could maybe sell the waterslides for folk to add your designs to thier own progects
i saw a cheap guitar in second hand shop with what looked like a paper print aplied ,decoupage style ,pretty poor quality but efective enough for the less discerning ,any technique is valid IMO but some people just do things better than others
nice work
