Hi guys..
I'm about to clear my latest project.. but I am in doubt how the result will be.... does any one have expirience with the following mix..
Basecoat is non glossy black... border in Kandy is a glossy effect.. But what happens when i clearcoat it with non glossy clear... ??
Will the glossy border disappear, or will it be visible throught the non glossy clear..??
Thanks,
Kasper

Oh ok....then yes....you should definitely be able to see the difference between the candy part and the black part once it has the matte finish....the candy won't have near as much shimmer in the sun as it would if it was glossy, but you should still be able to see it.

this will be interesting, i think the whole thing will look flat. Flat clear over the whole project will have a flat look i think! :suspect:

Please report to us your results!

of course the whole thing will be flat... you have to sand down the part for the clear to stick. which will yield a completely flat part..

its all going to look matte of that i am certain
plus if you have left some parts full gloss without sanding you also risk delamitaion later on

If you are SUPER CAREFUL you could mask the part of the tank that should remain mat and buff the part you want to be glossy. As soon as you buff, the gloss with come back. But you will have to stop often to replace the tape and you will have to make sure the way the buffer turns is coming off the tape and not lifting it...if that makes any sence.
Good luck!
Annie :)

I've been dreaming up a similar project. I hope to do a graphic that is solid gloss color pattern on a matte background. I have been in contact with automotive painters regarding how to accomplish this without leaving sharp paint edges in my clears. So far the best (theoretical) suggestion I've gotten was to spray the matte clear first, mask and then spray the gloss clear, pull the mask and spray solvent to soften the mask edges... Has anyone ever successfully pulled this off?
I would appreciate any suggestions you might have!
It will be a couple months before I get a chance to experiment... :(
OH - important detail: this will be over one color only - no color graphics at all. hoping for a subtle effect.

man this will be one for the books, i dont have a idear at all man, the flat clears are a little thinner, not by nature but by technique, and i dont think i have ever seen any one even attempt to shoot a gloss clear over a flat clear. i wounder if you could strip it clear to help hide the edge only? but i think if i would be trying it what i would do is shoot it gloss, mask that area that stays gloss and shoot the flat, but heres the trick i think, pull the tape before it drys, fact right after you spray it, this may just let that edge blend in enuf that its height may not be as noticeable, and only shoot one coat of the flat clear as well, better have a good gun and be on yer A game with this one man :sorcerer:

Well a bit of height won't bother me at all, it's a sharp edge there I would be worried about. In fact a raised texture might just add to the effect I'm after. I know it's going to be tough. It sounded like a simple task in the beginning, but the more I explore the methods and means, the more nervous I get, LOL.

I spray clear finishes on cabinets and furniture. If you want a portion to be glossy, you will have to topcoat that area with gloss, last. Matte or satin finish final topcoat will render a satin/matte finish.
