We would like to welcome all the new members to the Mike Learn Members Only Bulletin Board. We are confident that you will find these pages full of useful information and are very happy to provide support for all our content.
Please read the information below if you cannot see the Forums, or if you are unable to post in the Forums:
If this is your first visit and you cannot see the posts in the forums below, please make sure that you register for the boards. At this time, registering as a Member does not automatically register for the Bulletin Boards. You will only need to do this ONE TIME, and then you are in.
If you have registered, and cannot post, you should check your email. Once you register for the boards, an email is generated to the address that you used to sign up. It is very important that you click the confirmation link in that email to activate your account.
The confirmation email is generated immediately. If you have a filter on your mail, you may need to look in the junk folder for it. If you do not receive and email immediately, it is possible that the email address you entered was incorrect or incomplete and you should double check it in your personal profile that you can edit from the User CP link in the menu bar.
If, after reading the info above, you are still having problems, you can shoot us an email at info@mikelearn.com and I will investigate further.
THANKS! And Enjoy the Site!

Hi guys!
I just joined the site here. Im still new to AB but finally stepped up from single to dual stage. The difference has really inspired me to learn. I am currently ABing my motorcycle and been a rollercoaster of trial and error. I am hopeful that between here and the mag I will pick up some good habits.
Im off to do some reading (slacking at work)

This is my first post here, and I just wanted to say thanks to Derek, Shane, and Don. I met you guys in chat the other night and your advice has been great. Originally I had plans just for my wife to start abing, but after looking at the art and meeting a great bunch of people here I'm gonna do it to. I am gonna get my wife a MOJO as a suprise, but I she might have to share. She's a real good artist so I think she'll make the transition to ab more easily. I'm just having a helluva time making daggers! Oh, and get a class up here in the Sacramento Area. I (we) would love to go! And yeah, don't ask about the username.:naughty:

Dear Mike and Crew,
I was sent an issue of AB from Bearair, and it was the issue "Them is fighting words" article. After i read that article I went right out and Purchased a vinyl plotter. I have been hand doing all my masking and drawing and cutting for about 15 years. Till I read that. It has cut out about 8-10 hours of work!!!
I am a Professional Tattoo Artist, for a living, and airbrush for the love of it.
My point...the line drawing that i use, is the same that i load into the plotter!
And BINGO out comes cut mask!!!!! I have been working the last month cutting and brushing skate decks for my 5 kids, I cant get enough of it!!! it is like you
re awoke that little boy in me again that just picked up an airbrush for the first time!!!
I want to be more involved in the going ons here at this site, but i need a minute to figure out how and where everything is!
but right now I am trying to figure out the requirements for the Panel Swap. I cant find the Spec and rules. there is so much info my A.D.D. is going crazy...hahaha
so if you could help me out that would be great, and if i dont get the project done maybe i can make the next one! (But i like Pressure Deadlines)
Thanks Mike and Crew,
Randy DeShong II

Hello everyone! I'm new here and I have one question about how to join the Learn Academy live online class. Or is there any AB learning program I can take since I live so far away, in Vietnam. Thank you very much!
bob mc
07-19-2007, 02:42 PM
The class takes place over the webcam and chat room simultaneously.
The Learns make a forum posting when a class is scheduled, and it is usually noted in the calender portion of the site webpage as well.
I believe the classes are open to any registered member.
Times are usually noted in US Mountain time zone times... so you might have to convert to find what local time to be there.

Hi there Custom ZX-14, let me be the first to welcome you. I'm a beginner myself. I gotta tell you, I've had several cheap airbrushes starting out. I was near the point of giving up, thinking that the problems I was having was just because I wasn't skilled enough, or that I just didn't have what it takes. Just recently I bought a Mojo airbush, and let me tell you, the control you get with this thing is awesome. Fine line work no longer becomes a scary issue. A nice added feature, is that it is the best, but it is not the highest airbrush on the market.
The good people who run this site, and that sell the Mojo, Mike and Diana, do not need me to push the Mojo on anyone. They sell plenty of them with out my input. What I'm saying is, I'm not trying to push the Mojo just because I like Mike and Di, or because I'm a member of this site, I'm just saying that if you buy a Mojo, and you're new to the airbrushing world, and there is even a speck of an artist living in your soul, you're going to find that artist and bring it to the top.
Well that's all I've got to say about that right now, welcome to the site, and I hope to see you around.

If you are looking to airbrush only, it's one thing...if you wanna do the prep work, primer, sanding, basecoat and clear, it's another.
I'll answer the airbrush part for now. If you are buying your first airbrush and don't wanna spend a ton of money, I strongly reccomend the Peak C5. It's very versatile and allows you to do fine lines to a resonably large spray. Once you can handle this baby properly, it's time to invest in a Richpen Mojo. And if you wanna start with a bottle feed instead of the Peak C5, I recommend the Richpen Moflo.
If you will use uros (Base coat, automotive paints, solvent based) you will need a cartridge mask or an air adduction mask (this one needs a compressor to bring you fresh air).
You will need a compressor if you don't have one. If noise is a factor, go with Silentair. Make sure you buy one with an air reserve tank or else, it will heat up and might die. If you wanna be able to drive other tools like a sander, a regular size paint gun and such, get the biggest you can affoard and not an oiless one.
You will need stuff like tack rags, chalk, transfer paper, knifes, xacto, saral paper (to transfer ur design like carbon paper kinda).
Don't forget to buy a hose with your airbrush.
I hope this helps for now!
Annie :D

You can go to sears and get a small compressor with a tank, oil lubricated, for around 100 bucks. If you go to bear air you can get a paasche VL with all the different needles and nozzles and a few different cups/jars for 70 or so I think, it also comes with a hose, then all ya gotta do is buy a twenty or fifty foot hose, put a water/oil filter on the end of that, and you're good to go, well, with some paint and whatnot of course lol

Welcome, everyone! I hope you will all find this place to be your new home. There's so much to absorb in the forums, how-to's, & vast number of articles that Mike & Di & the members here have worked so hard to gather for our airbrushing brethren. Please feel free to ask for help whenever you need it. There are no stupid questions here, just a lot of people willing to give a hand.

Hi, I thought it was about time I became an “active” member here (long time lurker) as I have been a member for over a year. I’m in my practicing phase of airbrushing and it’s hobby type stuff, portraits mainly. I'll post some pics of my practice soon so you can see where I am with it. Glad to meet ya’ll :-)
Oh, I may be only practicing, but I’m practicing with the best, I have two MOJO’s. Just need the talent to catch up with the equipment. And yes the blood letting has happened :-)

Congratulations Nik, how did you find their service? I ordered some aluminium panels from them, excellent service. Welcome to the site by the way. Everyone here is great, always willing to help, just like one big family. If you need any help on paint , how to do something or even have something to share that could be helpful. Or if you want some constructive critisism on a painting, just post it and you will get some feedback. What more can I say?

Thanks' for the welcome,
The custom paint shop was great, I went to see them (had a day off work). They have lots of Mike's DVD's and other stuff, Del was not there, but his wife is very helpful, also she said that they are about to stock HOK paint soon.
Will use there online store next time, to get stencils, paint etc, and that first DVD!!
Just need to find my way around the forum, as I have not paid for a subscription yet, so there are a lot of things not available.
cheers,
Nik

Thank's,
I would like some advice, but when I try to post in the help forum it blocks me with "you do not have permission to post".
Forums are new to me so please be patient, if I post here please move it to where it needs to go.
I have been using Urethane paint in the automotive repair bodyshop for year's, and I think it would be best for now to say with what you know.
What I would like to know is what make of paint do you recommend?
I know HOK and Kustom shop, for candy and transparent, etc, are available here in the UK, but never used anything like this before.
Would I also be able to use the white, black, and other solid / pearl / metallic base costs from the Max Mayer vehicle range, as these are what I use now? Or would the pigments be too corse for the Mojo?
Kind regards
Nik
PS, I have nothing against waterbased, just never used them.

its cool nik yes you can use them paints, just get yer self some slow reducer and have at it, also get yer self some of the slowest lacquer thinner you can round up and start using a drop or 5 in yer cup as you painting, that will break up them pigments real fine and they will flow like liquid gold out the nose of that bad boy, you will create art like you have never seen and become famous and have yer own web site and people will look up to you and throw moneys at you by the hand fulls, then you will travel the world and teach others and again moneys will rain like a thunder storm at yer feet and soon the stars will realign and they will name a constellation after you, or you will just be better then you were yesterday. :fing02:
Cool, my bro gave me one of his old Moto X helmets to paint, so I carn't wait to try the mojo!!
The helmet is made from a kevlar mix, but is now scrap as a bike hit it when he lost it big time.$$$$$
Will go for a black base, then try one of Mikes skull stencils with some base coat white, trying to build up light and shadow, poss play with candys over that?
Cheer's again,
Nik

Hey man, im new at this stuff, so i dont wanna talk to anybody about anything, cause ill sound stupid. Yes, im only sixteen, but i was wondering if i could have some beginners instruction. I do have an airbrush i can use, and a tank, but the tank needs to be modified and i need to lay my hands on a good(but cheap) compressor. From reading your profile and looking at your pics, it looks like you do nice work. If you could impart some wisdom for a beginner it would be much appreciated.

welcome to the site man, dont worry about sounding stupid at all, we have all been there man, and just cause yer 16 dont mean your any way less of a artist then any one else here. as far as instruction, mine will be different then most others on here but i say just play around with it drawing lines and dots for a while tell you get to know what does what, then mess with the paints a bit tell you see what reducing does to the paint and what changing the air pressure has on it. after you have become some what comfortable with the airbrush in yer hand then start with the dot and dagger practice stuff. Its also a lot easier for us to help you out if we can see something you paint, your learning curve will be drastically reduced if we help ya man! :punk:

Hah, okay. Thats definitely a confidence booster. Im still layin hands on all my materials, but so far im doin okay. I sprayed some model airplanes and they came out pretty well. They were small, not much room for detail, but i tried to do 'em the right way. I did them in the military's authentic colors with an almost tiger stripe layered camo.
Ive been workin with the brush some, trying to find the best angles and methods. Just simple designs is all i did. :em0100:
Any tips for what types of things to paint first?

I am a bit confused about the membership levels. Can't afford it at the moment but can't find where to look for them either. I really like the site though. Can't wait to "sink" my teeth into it. I really want to learn how to airbrush on canvas. Watched a really awesome video today of someone painting a gas tank for a MC with an angle and seaside scene. Really cool....
I have gone to a community college for far to long. Just got back there in January. Need to finish some things. But I have been building models for a while. Got my first Iwata about a year ago. Have a terrible compressor and need a new one. But have to wait a bit.

Hi Jim!
Welcome to the website. It really is not obvious to find the membership info... even after all this time one the website, I always have to go back and check to find it :D
Click User CP on the top menu of any page. After that, on the menu on the left of the page, scroll down (almost the bottom of the page) and click Paid Subscriptions in the miscellaneous section and there you will have all the info you need.
If you need anything, don't hesitate to ask!
Again welcome and use the forum to ask all you want about airbrushing canvas :)

Okay thanks for the welcome guys. Things have been a bit crazy for me this semester. Was behind then got sick for two weeks. Anyway I have been behind ever since. Finally almost over and still have a lot to do.
But anyway now that I have ranted. I have been building but not finishing models for years. There's always a pattern. Anyway, I am a member of several model forums. On a couple of them there is a gallery section. Some even go into great details on how they got where they got. Anyway these things are not temporary as I am sure most of the few things I have been able to look at this weekend here are. They are in special areas that remain there forever. I thought that might be cool to do here.
Anyway the sites are
Aircraft Resource Center
http://www.arcforums.com/forums/air/index.php
Click on ARC Air at the top left to see the Gallery section and there's tons of stuff there.
Or the one I volunteer for Armoroma.
http://armorama.kitmaker.net/
Then click on Features and you'll get to the one I was really thinking of.
Thanks for the welcomes.
Annie

Nothing is temporary here, it's all saved on the website, just gets pushed further when new stuff is added but its always there.

Been "Airbrushing" for a couple of years now, nothing fancy, just laying flat coats of paint on the models I build.
I bought a couple of skull stencils to try out and then the "pin up girlies" to spray a nose art design on my bike tank.
If I can do that I will be ecstatic.
And!!, I just ordered "The Profiler - Faces of Wrath" stencils from The Custom Paint Shop here in the UK
Don't you just love Christmas :clap:

I hope to someday contribute to this site but for now I have a lot of reading to catch up on and post a few thoughts and airbrush about 100 panels before I would feel worthy enough to contribute.Currently using a master g23 and a cheapy from harbor frieght. I use Autoair and Createx paints. Here is a sample of a bike I just did for my wife.Auto air and H.O.K. UC 35 clear coat with sg100 intercoat between colors. Any comments would be appreciated.

My background is Signs and Airbrushing since the 70's, but took a break from Airbrushing for an extended period of time in between.... I have a Paache Mellinium, an Iwata eclipse, Rich pen, an Infinity, and a Micron hb. Also do Hand lettering and pinstriping as well.
Here's abike that I just finished the other day.. Metal flake background, covered in Candy apple red, Airbrushed pinups, some variagated Gold leaf and some Freehand pinstriping...
Looking forward to taking part.
